The opening day of our main duck season(VA) is this weekend. I have many different species of duck decoys and I was wondering if I should put them all out on opening day or add some gradually as the migration progress and stick with mostly mallards opening day? Any suggestions?

My best luck has always been to use the migration as a guide. I start out the season kind of small if there are not alot of ducks in the area. As the migrators move into the area and the hunting pressure gets bigger, I add more to the decoys. At some point, if the weather keeps the birds in one place for awhile, you will see the ducks flare everytime they get sight of a big spread. That is when I change tactics and go back to just 3-5 decoys on the water. Ducks don't believe in 100 decoys per raft in every pocket of the marsh. They will start to look for the small pockets of birds just along the shoreline. Tuck 3-4 birds along the shoreline and put the other out a few yards with a jerk string just to catch the attention of passing birds and when they notice the birds along the shore, they should commit. Hope this helps. Take'em when they're all cupped up! dc

My spread consists of mostly mallards.  early season I always throw out a teal or 2 in front of the blind.  I also like to have a line of Blue bills out at the edge of shooting range,  I like to mix things up a bit as the season goes along.  My mallard spread also has plastic decoys that have been painted flat black (usually after I have found a leak and repaired it).   I like the flat blacks inter mixed since they add some higher visibility.  Seems to work for me.

Mike, you have almost described my opening day spread perfectly. I use a few green and blue wing teal and a line of buffleheads to draw in the divers. Good stuff, thanks for the input. dc
